Magpie answers the phone for home service businesses — plumbing, HVAC, electrical, roofing, solar, cleaning, pest control and garage door companies. This page explains, in plain words, what we collect when you call one of those businesses or ask us to call you, what we do with it, and what we never do.
Who this covers
Callers — people who ring a business that uses Magpie, or who are rung back by one. For these calls we act on behalf of that business, and the business decides what the information is used for.
Contractors — business owners who use Magpie or ask us to call them about it.
What we collect
- What you tell the receptionist on a call: your name, phone number, the service address, the problem, and when suits you.
- The phone number you called from and the time of the call.
- A recording and a written transcript of the call may be kept, so the business can see what was said and so we can make the receptionist better at her job.
- If you fill in a form on this site: your name, business name, mobile number, and a record that you ticked the box asking us to call.
What we use it for
- To book the job you rang about with the business you rang, and to tell that business about it — including ringing the owner on an emergency.
- To ring you back if your call dropped before you could finish, once per enquiry, or to offer you a new time if the business cannot make the one you were given.
- To review calls and fix anything the receptionist handled badly.
- For contractors who asked us to call: to make that call and follow up about Magpie.
Who it is shared with
- The business you called. That is the point of the call.
- That business's job software, if they have connected one (for example ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro), so the job appears on their schedule.
- The service providers that run Magpie — telephony, voice processing, AI language processing and hosting — only to operate the service, under their own confidentiality and security obligations.
We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for advertising.
Text messages
Magpie does not send text messages. Everything happens by voice.
Stopping calls
Say "stop calling" on any call from Magpie and your number is blocked from further calls immediately and permanently. You can also ask for this through the Book a call page.
How long we keep it
Call records are kept so the business you called can see its own job history. You, or that business, can ask for them to be deleted. A record that you asked us to stop calling is kept permanently, because deleting it would let the calls start again.
Security
Information is sent over encrypted connections. Credentials a business gives us to connect its job software are stored encrypted and never written to logs, files or messages.
Your choices
You can ask to see, correct or delete the information we hold about you. For a call to a business, you can also ask that business directly. Use the Book a call page and ask for Tom.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
